Tabor Opera House   Feature! Free!

The Opera House remains intact much as it must have been on opening night, November 20, 1879. It is one of only a few “Tabor” associated buildings still standing in Colorado. With his riches, H.A.W. Tabor built what was said to be the finest theater between St. Louis and San Francisco. Architect George King with builders J.T. Roberts and, L.E. Roberts built the Opera House in 1879 in 100 days with an estimated cost of $78,000. Since Leadville had not yet been reached by railroad, materials which were not available locally were brought in by wagon. Most of the 880 original seats are still in the theater.

This massive three-story building was constructed of stone, brick, and iron, and trimmed with Portland cement. The solid brick walls are 16 inches thick. The building is 60 feet wide, 120 feet deep, and 60 feet tall. Some architectural details of note of this grand old building. The exterior features a bracketed cornice with a central pediment pavilion. The third story windows are segmental arched, double hung with arched caps. Windows on the second floor are semi-circular with cement lintels which were cast on the site and then attached. The ground floor has a recessed double panel door with a fanlight in the center which is unusual for this district. The center entrance is bracketed by two store entrances each with doors which are set back from the sidewalk. The spaces on either side have always been retail space. The center doors of the Opera House open to revel the large staircase entrance to the opera house theater.

In 1889 the old board sidewalks in front were replaced with paving stone from the Frying Pan River region. Silver bricks were laid down in honor of the visit by President Ulysses S. Grant. Many famous people have performed or visited here--Houdini, Susan B. Anthony, Oscar Wilde, Jack Dempsey, John Phillip Sousa, Metropolitan Opera and The Chicago Symphony to name a few. With its original facade and some of its original fixtures and magnificent hand-painted scenery, the Tabor Opera House is a Leadville landmark. . . worthy of a long visit.

45-60 minute visit.
